Ranbir Kapoor After the film ‘Sanju’ in the year 2018, the screen has now been seen for almost 4 years. He has made a comeback with Karan Malhotra’s film ‘Shamshera’. Despite being in double role of father and son in this film, they are not able to save the film from flop. Sometimes ‘Shamshera’ makes fun of masala films running at the box office. Seeing this film, it seems that the filmmakers have tried to revive cinema in the same way. The film stars Vaani Kapoor with Ranbir while Sanjay Dutt plays the villain.
Makers and fans had high hopes from Ranbir Kapoor starrer film ‘Shamshera’. But it is clear from the response that the film is getting that the audience has rejected this film. The story of the film is set in the 18th century, Bali (Ranbir Kapoor) who wants to become an officer in the army but he comes from a tribe that has been enslaved by the British. Ranbir has also played the role of Shamshera, the father of Balli, who heads the tribe. Both the characters of Ranbir lead their clan in rebellion against the British.
Vaani Kapoor’s role is nothing special
Despite Vaani Kapoor’s false claims in a pre-release interview, ‘Shamshera’ has nothing special for her to do. Except to dance and seduce you. He had told that ‘his character Sona is in love with Bally and will get to see a lot’. Sona is seen with all the characteristics of a dancer of Hindi films in the 90s and 2000s. Apart from just wooing her lover, there is no special role in the film. Many times reminds us of the era of Bollywood gangster films, in which the heroine is seen swinging in the dance bar.
Weak story fails Ranbir Kapoor-Sanjay Dutt
Ranbir Kapoor has tried his best to bring life to the characters of father and son but could not succeed in saving the shortcomings of the writing of the film. He is unable to show charisma as an incompetent son and lover of a dancer. Actually, the film tries to show the social evils of the cast system and eventually becomes a caricature of the characters. The worst is of Sanjay Dutt’s character Shuddh Singh. Which is very inhuman and cruel who helps the British for their own benefit. Shuddh Singh commits atrocities fiercely, but the way the verses are recited in Sanskrit, then there is a spectacle full of jokes.
Overall, Karan Malhotra, Ranbir Singh, including all the actors, have failed to capture the talent on screen. Be it the story of the film or the direction or the music, all together make the film cumbersome.
