Marvel and Sony are going all out to get Spider-Man: No Way Home nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. To that purpose, they’ve sent stars Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire on a press tour, where they’ll discuss the film’s broader responsibility in these tough epidemic times.

Director Jon Watts discussed bringing the three Spider-Man actors together on screen in a new interview with Variety, as well as his own fears about shooting a picture at this moment. He recalls being 20 years old when the first Spider-Man film was released in the aftermath of September 11th. And now, as audiences grapple with an epidemic that refuses to abate, he has his own picture.

After Peter Parker cracks open the cosmos, No Way Home brings together three generations of Spider-Man actors on film (and more importantly, a deal struck between Sony and Marvel that allows for an exchange of characters).

Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s versions of the Marvel superhero were able to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe from different realities as a result of the relocation.

Watts said he planned up a ‘therapy session’ with the three actors, as well as Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, before filming the first scene in which all three would be together. “We sat in a circle on folding chairs and went over the script collectively.” I’d spoken with everyone individually, but having everyone together to discuss the tale, how the pieces came together, and what Spider-Man meant to them was thrilling. We had the only three performers who had ever played Spider-Man in a movie, and each of them had been through a lot, both on and off screen. He described it as “like a Spider-Man therapy session.”

Maguire was the first person to portray Spider-Man on film. Sam Raimi directed a trilogy of films in which he starred. Garfield portrayed Spider-Man in two Marc Webb flicks. Holland has been playing Spider-Man since 2016, and he has starred in six films so far, with more on the way. No Way Home has shattered various box office records from the epidemic era. It has a global revenue of $1.7 billion, including more than Rs 200 crore in India.
